Programming Strategy 2025–29

Programming is how State Library Victoria comes to life.

Each year, millions of people connect with the Library through exhibitions, talks, events, education programs and digital experiences – moments that spark curiosity, share ideas and bring people together.

Since opening in 1856 as ‘the people’s university’, the Library has been a place to discover, learn and connect. Today, our programming continues this legacy by connecting people with ideas, collections and each other.

Our Programming Strategy will guide this work over the next 4 years – shaping how we create meaningful, shared experiences for audiences onsite and online.

We are focused on growing the reach and impact of our programming: creating unmissable experiences, supporting learning and creativity, and ensuring more people see themselves reflected in the Library.

Our programming is guided by 4 key pillars:

  • Establishing the Library as a premier cultural destination
  • Elevating the Library’s  role as a civic space for lifelong learning, critical thinking and public dialogue
  • Focusing on inclusive, community-engaged storytelling as a tool for literacy, identity and cohesion
  • Positioning the Library as a centre for active cultural, creative and knowledge production

Together, these pillars shape the experiences we create and the role the Library plays in people’s lives.

Because at its best, programming doesn’t just reflect the world – it helps shape it. And that’s the role the Library is here to play.
