Collaborations and affiliations

The Library collaborates with an extensive range of partners to develop collective economies and knowledge-sharing strategies.

New and ongoing relationships with galleries, libraries, archives and museums, educational institutions, government agencies and not-for-profit associations play an invaluable role in extending the services we can offer to the Victorian public.

Significant international library collaborations include a longstanding sister-library partnership with the Nanjing Public Library in China, and Memorandum of Understanding with the National Library Board of Singapore. Most recently, the Library signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Sichuan Public Library in Chengdu.

At a national level, the Library contributes significantly to peak bodies such as the National and State Libraries of Australia (NSLA), hosting the Secretariat, working with NSLA partner libraries in the development of shared solutions and focusing on:

  • digital collection development
  • legal deposit
  • digital preservation
  • open access and copyright
  • Indigenous services and collections

Closer to home, the Library works closely with the Public Libraries Victoria Network (PLVN) and School Library Association of Victoria (SLAV) to promote, initiate and deliver educational and professional development programs. Of course, we also work closely with public libraries across the state.

Our partnerships with Australian academic institutions range from Australian Research Council (ARC) funded research projects, to publishing activities and research fellowships (such as the Redmond Barry Fellowship with the University of Melbourne) and the experiential learning program The Poison Cabinet with La Trobe University.

Our current ARC research partners include:

    • Australian Library and Information Association
    • Australian National University
    • Charles Sturt University
    • Deakin University
    • La Trobe University
    • Monash University
    • Museum Victoria
    • Native Titles Services Victoria Ltd
    • Swinburne University
    • University of Southern Queensland
    • University of Sydney
    • Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages
    • Western Sydney University

Other recent partnerships include the Australian Learning Lecture (ALL), a 10-year joint project with the Koshland Innovation Fund, which seeks to bring big ideas in education to national attention.
