Collection Strategy 2025–29

170 years ago, the Library opened its doors with a collection designed to inform and educate Victorians. The 3846 original volumes have expanded to more than 4.5 million items, including 4,135,581 physical items and 403,828 electronic resources. Our rich collection includes books, manuscripts, serials, photographs, artworks, maps and ephemera.

Our Collection Strategy will guide our efforts and impact over the next four years to benefit communities and individuals now and in the future.

Our vision of a library for all in a changing world is based on providing access to be a trusted source that enables the creation of new knowledge.

We will continue to build knowledge, strengthen community and inspire our future through collection activities. Our pillars for the strategy are:

  • Building the physical and digital collections
  • Transforming collection access through storage and retrieval
  • Creating access to enable all Victorians to find materials
  • Preserving the collection to ensure long term access
  • Enabling patrons to easily explore and reuse the collection
  • Extending access through digital
