Opening hours

Each year we welcome over a million visitors to our glorious heritage building in Melbourne's CBD. If you're planning a visit, here's when we're open, how to get here and our printable Library map (pdf, 4 MB).

Library opening hours

The Library is open from 10am to 6pm, seven days a week. Find out more about a COVID-safe Library.

Main public areas
Daily 10am to 6pm
Heritage Collections Reading Room
Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm;
Saturday & Sunday 10am to 6pm
The Ian Potter Queen's Hall
Daily 10am to 5pm
Victoria Gallery
Daily 10am to 6pm
Dome Galleries
Daily 10am to 5pm;
Dome Gallery 4 is temporarily closed, to reopen 27 January 2022
Cowen Gallery, including
North and South Rotundas
Same as main public areas except when closed for functions.
Mr Tulk cafe
Daily 8.30am to 4.30pm
Russell Street Welcome Zone
Temporarily closed (including Readings State Library), to reopen January 2022

The Library will be closed from 6pm, Friday 24 December to 10am, Tuesday 4 January 2022.

Public holidays 2021

The Library is closed on these public holidays:

  • Good Friday – Friday 2 April
  • Christmas Day – Saturday 25 December
  • Boxing Day – Sunday 26 December
  • New Years Day – Saturday 1 January 2022.

The Library is open from 10am to 6pm on these public holidays:

  • Australia Day – Tuesday 26 January
  • Labour Day – Monday 8 March
  • Easter Saturday 3 April to Easter Monday 5 April, inclusive
  • Anzac Day – Sunday 25 April
  • Queen's Birthday – Monday 14 June
  • AFL Grand Final day – to be confirmed when the AFL schedule is released, but usually the last Friday of September
  • Melbourne Cup Day – Tuesday 2 November.
