With its roots in the 1970s counterculture and the early eighties community theatre, cabaret and circus, the story of the Melbourne Fringe is one of resilience, eccentricity, and joy.

Dr Rob has spent the last twenty-five years researching and writing about Australian theatre. It’s about time they did something with it. One of the first things they learned was how little anybody in the Australian theatre knew about it. The second thing was how much of it there was.

About Dr Rob

Dr Rob Reid (they/them) has a PhD in Australian Theatre History and is an experienced teacher and academic with comprehensive knowledge of Melbourne, Victorian and Australian theatre history.

A playwright and director since 2000, Dr Rob was the Artistic Director of the independent theatre company Theatre in Decay from 2000 to 2007. From 2011 to 2016, they were Artistic Director of the Live Games and Immersive Theatre company Pop Up Playground. Their play scripts have been commissioned and produced by the Melbourne Theatre Company and a wide range of independent theatre companies around Australia and the UK.
