Top five Summer Blockbuster events

Coloured LEGO pieces
25 November 2021

Reconnect with your sense of wonder and creativity this summer, with the Library’s chock-a-block program full of interactive sessions and mind-expanding experiences for kids, families, and adults to enjoy.

To assist with choosing – as we know everyone’s holiday season can get a little busy – we’ve enlisted the help of one of State Library Victoria's most experienced Creative Programs Managers, Helen, to pick the top five events she hopes to attend this Summer Blockbuster.

See Helen's top picks below, and book your tickets today!

Spark: adaptation

Spark is the Library’s new monthly lecture series – with a twist. Presented in partnership with the visually spectacular scientific storytellers Future Crunch, this event will offer significant provocations. A panel of thinkers and doers will explore a topic, followed by a lively conversation from the audience about the ideas raised and possible steps to make them happen. The event will be hosted by multidisciplinary storyteller Stephanie Kabanyana Kanyandekwe with an exploration of the adaptability quotient.

State Library Bricktoria: treasure hunt

Across three days in January, we’re throwing open the Library doors for a huge treasure hunt! To celebrate our summer State Library Bricktoria program, we have created a site-wide trail designed to lead you through secret spaces and unexpected twists and turns, following clues and a map to collect your prize. You will collect LEGO® bricks, which will enable you to build your own model of a scene from the Library that you can take home at the end of the day.

After you’ve completed the hunt, it’s a great chance to view the large-scale State Library Victoria LEGO® brick model, which was constructed by the Brickman’s team. Also for viewing is the LEGO® brick mosaic, which is an image from a well-known children’s book Welcome to Country, written by Aunty Joy Murphy and beautifully illustrated by Lisa Kennedy.

State Library Bricktoria: bricks and beats

Who said playing with LEGO® bricks was just for kids? I’m excited about the bricks and beats with the Brickman event as it will be my first chance to explore the Library after-dark. It feels particularly fitting to be able to do so while also viewing the large-scale State Library Victoria LEGO® brick model.

I’m particularly looking forward to the treasure hunt, where each participant deciphers clues to find the missing LEGO® bricks to build a model. I'm also excited to work with friends to help create the giant mystery mosaic image taken from one of the Library’s books and finally, I’m hoping to have a beer with the Brickman (if I’m lucky!) and ply him with my many model-building questions, all while listening DJ Hot Wheels spinning tunes.

Kids Takeover

The Kids Takeover this summer is a chance for the little people in your life to make noise in the Library! We will have a full day of activities encouraging everyone to get creative as they explore the Library spaces. From making papercraft in the Quad to enjoying Circus Nexus in the Create Quarter, seeing performers roving around the Information Centre and having a magician blow your mind in the Conversation Quarter. We’ll also have an exciting scientific installation from Skunk Control in the Pauline Gandel Children’s Quarter. It will be a fun day for families and a chance to see the Library as you’ve never seen it before.

Musical Stories: Introducing Teddy

Musical Stories is a new collaboration with Orchestra Victoria designed to introduce children to the magic of live music at a special musical storytelling event. The fantastic book Introducing Teddy by Jess Walton has been set to the sounds of woodwind, string and percussion instruments in an interactive session that is a perfect first musical experience for young people. Children will have the chance to participate in the storytelling and learn about all the different instruments being played!
