Use historical thinking skills to step back in time to examine the changing features of Victoria. Students will gain an understanding of the impact of colonisation during the 19th and 20th centuries by exploring State Library Victoria’s vast collection of historical artefacts.

Online workshops are available Tuesday-Thursday during term time at 10.00am, 12.30pm and 2.00pm.

Students will:  

  • use historical sources as evidence to gain an understanding of Victoria’s colonial past
  • analyse cause and effect of the colonisation of Victoria 
  • determine historical significance of key figures and events in Victoria’s history 
  • participate in a guided tour of the Library’s heritage spaces (onsite)

This program links to the Victorian Curriculum and helps students to:  

  • Analyse the long term causes, short term triggers and the intended and unintended effects of significant events and developments (VCHHC127).
  • Analyse the different perspectives of people in the past and evaluate how these perspectives are influenced by significant events, ideas, location, beliefs and values (VCHHC124).
  • Evaluate different historical interpretations and contested debates (VCHHC125).
  • Evaluate the historical significance of an event, idea, individual or place (VCHHC128).
