How to train your Santa

20 December 2021

The festive season is upon us once more and as we emerge from another year of lockdown, so too do Santa’s representatives all across the world.

The origins of the department store Santa can be traced back to Massachusetts in 1890, but it wasn't long before Australian department stores featured their own Santas. In 1964, to ensure they could continue to supply their stores with knowledgeable and authentic Santas, Myer even flew in an expert from the world’s first Santa School!

In today's blog Librarian Jodi Kok takes a look at the history of department store Santas and explores what they learn at Santa School, from diet and costume specifications to how to handle 'silly high school girls'.
