Persian tales of earthly and spiritual love have been retold and reinterpreted from the 11th century onwards.
This image gallery showcases these tales in beautifully illustrated manuscripts from our Love and devotion exhibition. It includes classic works by Nizami and Jami, Firdausi's epic Shahnama (Book of Kings) and the lyrics of Hafiz, a prized Kelmscott Chaucer that echoes Persian themes, and more.
Presented at the Library in 2012, the Love and devotion exhibition featured illustrated manuscripts and miniatures from the Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford, as well as rare books and maps from our own collections.
