Street art is an iconic yet ephemeral part of Victoria’s modern cultural identity.
In her portrait series Behind the Paint, Melbourne photographer Shannyn Higgins heroes this unique sub-culture by capturing the state’s internationally renowned street artists within a world they’ve created.
The 14 portraits were taken over two weeks in February at urban street art festival Can’t Do Tomorrow. Each image is a burst of colour, shapes and personalities that responds to the energy and sentiment of the artwork and artist.
The series was added to the Library’s collection in November 2020. It represents the story of Victoria today as told by our local artists, and celebrates the indelible imprint they have on the state’s urban fabric.
