Reading, Writing and Talking About Books – Ramona Koval Delivers 2012 Redmond Barry Lecture

Ramona Koval, writer, broadcaster and former presenter of  ABC Radio National’s The Book Show, will deliver the 2012 Redmond Barry Lecture:  By the book – a reader’s guide to life.

After a long career of reading and talking with some of the most important writers of our time, Ramona will share stories of her life with books and celebrate the luck of reading the right book at the right time; reading between the lines of novels to fathom the mysteries of politics; finding clues to the politics of relationships in the classics of ancient Rome.

‘I've learnt almost everything from the books I've read’ says Ramona.  ‘As a child I found Franz Kafka's The Trial at my local library which introduced me to politics that were mysterious and strange. It whetted my appetite for books that challenge ideas, systems and established ways of thinking. These books are invitations to think beyond our own experience, showing us a larger world. Readinghas been one of the greatest gifts of my life.’

The annual Redmond Barry Lecture honours the life and work of Sir Redmond Barry (1813–80), founder of the State Library and a key figure in the development of Australia’s cultural and intellectual life.  This year the lecture also celebrates the National Year of Reading.

The 2012 Redmond Barry Lecture is a free event on Tuesday 26 June at6:30pm at the State Library of Victoria.
