2016: Stephanie Holm

Book manuscript: From curious creatures to bushland beasts: A graphic novel exploring representations of Australian fauna and flora in early Australian children’s book publishing

Stephanie's project explored how native flora and fauna species have been represented and characterised in text and illustrations in early Australian children's literature.

Her project looked at how Europeans responded to a strange and alien land, filled with unfamiliar species. Using a selection of 19th- and early-20th-century children's books, the research will result in a graphic novel.

Stephanie Holm is a published illustrator and writer working towards a PhD in Natural History Illustration at the University of Newcastle. Her practice-based, auto-ethnographic research investigates how natural history illustration methodology can be used to develop a choreography of a bushland region.

Stephanie's writing has been published in anthologies, and her natural history book Wildscapes: an Australian art therapy colouring book was published by Murdoch Books in 2015.
