This image gallery – featuring artwork from the State Library's Cowen Gallery – includes colonial and modern portraits, paintings of Victorian landscapes and iconic Melbourne landmarks, and artists' impressions of events from Victoria's history.
Formerly known as the Stawell Gallery, the Library's Cowen Gallery was constructed in 1892 for the National Gallery of Victoria, which occupied the building until 1968. The Cowen Gallery features a permanent display of around 150 works of art from the Pictures Collection.
Note: From 5 March 2018, as part of our Vision 2020 redevelopment project, the artworks currently displayed in Cowen Gallery will be progressively removed. The refreshed Cowen Gallery exhibition will be installed in spring 2018.
