Newspapers online

The emergence of digital newspaper archives has transformed the Library's newspaper collections in recent years. A diverse selection of historic, modern and current newspapers is now available online.

Victorian registered users of the Library can access many of these from home, including recent archives of major Australian newspapers. The Library provides access to these sophisticated online archives, containing many overseas newspapers, in preference to collecting and retaining print copies.

Historic newspapers

If you’re looking for historical primary sources, researching family history or just interested in the past, newspapers are full of fascination. Many are available electronically. You can access 19th- and 20th-century Australian, British and New Zealand newspapers online. As well, the Library is currently adding more Victorian newspapers to the Historic Australian Newspapers site; included in this is a major project commemorating World War I.

Modern newspapers

Many current newspapers are available through electronic collections like ProQuest Australia & New Zealand Newsstream (2001- ) and international titles via ProQuest Central. These usually include more content than you can find on the newspapers’ own websites. The content is also kept up-to-date and there are often substantial archives. PressReader is wonderful for catching up on recent news from countries around the world, complete with photos, ads and the ability to flip through pages online.
