Champion New Zealand–born racehorse Carbine had 33 wins from 43 starts, 15 in succession by 1889. He achieved legendary status with his Melbourne Cup win in 1890, winning the race in the record time of three minutes 28 seconds. He was retired to stud in 1891, and sold to the Duke of Portland in England in 1895. More than half of the Melbourne Cup winners since 1914 are descended from Carbine, including Phar Lap and Makybe Diva.
