Accessing Library resources and services

Assistive technology

  • There are three assistive technology PCs available. Learn more about the Library’s assistive technology through our guide: Assistive technology at State Library Victoria.
  • They are reserved for visitors with accessibility requirements, such as vision, mobility or learning disability requirements.
  • These computers have larger screens and are on adjustable height desks, and specialist software to assist with internet access, reading, writing, research, collection access and other tasks.
  • These computers are in the Information Centre on Level 2 (ground floor), and the Redmond Barry Reading Room, Level 2A.
  • Bookings can be made by speaking to our friendly staff in the Information Centre or Redmond Barry Reading Room.
  • Bookings are for one hour and can be extended, depending on demand.
  • There are 25 general access PCs in the Information Centre.

Reading assistance tools

  • Book rests, magnifying sheets and illuminated magnifiers for readers with low vision are available.
  • Video magnifiers can electronically zooms in on physical books and documents in detail. One is available in the Information Centre, and the other video magnifier is available in the Redmond Barry Reading Room.
  • Please ask staff in the area for assistance if required, or read the section on magnifiers in our assistive technology guide.

Access and Inclusion Librarian

The Access and Inclusion Librarian is available to assist visitors with disability and their carers to access the collection and Library services.

The Access and Inclusion Librarian can also provide information and referrals to other agencies that may be of assistance.

Online resources

The State Library has more than 600,000 digitised collection items, and access to 1 million ebooks and 1 billion online articles. You will need your membership details to access many of the Library’s electronic resources.
