This online exhibition of photographic portraits in collaboration with Gippsland Aboriginal Elders, leaders and artists seeks to honour the importance of these people as members of the Gunaikurnai community.
The Gunaikurnai people are the traditional owners of the Gippsland region in south-eastern Victoria.
Photographer Angela Lynkushka has been working with the Gippsland Aboriginal community for 18 years. The portraits in this, her second series of photographic portraits of Elders and leaders of the Gippsland Gunaikurnai people, were commissioned by State Library Victoria in 2014–16. As part of her collaborative process, Lynkushka asked the sitters to choose the location where they'd like to be photographed.
This online gallery reproduces a small selection of images from the On Gunaikurnai Country exhibition, on display in the Blue Rotunda, Cowen Gallery, from 5 May to 30 July 2017.
