Food, cookery, nutrition and dietetics: The Dr Beverley Wood collection is a representative and comprehensive reference on the subjects of food, cookery, nutrition and dietetics in the region to 1988 (inclusive) and sometimes beyond. 

Th collection includes more than 9000 items from Australia, New Zealand, the Western Pacific and Antarctica, together with relevant material from surrounding lands – such as Lord Howe Island, Fiji, New Norfolk, Nauru, New Guinea, Timor, Vanuatu - and other islands close to Australia.

This collection brings together varied reference material to make the study of food and health in Australia readily accessible to all. 

Dr Beverley Wood has extensive experience in food, nutrition and dietetic practice and research. She was the first editor of The Australian Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics, and editor of Tucker in Australia, one of the early books about the food habits of Australians. The collection includes:

  • Convicted Tastes: Food in Australia - a lively and interesting view by an author and journalist of the history of food, food habits, cookery and social customs in Australia over the last 200 years 
  • Colonial Cook Book: For the many as well as for the 'upper ten thousand' - a rearrangement of the first Australian cookery book, The English and Australian Cookery book by E. Abbott (1864). Includes household management, a wide selection of recipes and a section on "A gentlewoman's guide to all occasions." 
  • Child Care - a 1982 manual from the Health Commission of Victoria on caring for infants and young children from 0-6 years, including sections on breast feeding, artificial feeding, the educational diet and illness in infants.
