Company records

The Library holds a number of significant business archives. These records are an important resource for researching business history in Victoria, Australia and internationally.

Company records are an archive of the documents that a business accumulates throughout its life, including minute books, accounts, business correspondence and various artefacts.

Highlights of the collection include:

• records of early pastoral companies, such as the Clyde Company, a Scottish stock concern with land holdings in Victoria in the early years of the colony
• the Coles Myer company and business records plus a rich array of artefacts dating back to the 1840s; it is the largest complete collection ever donated to the Library, and consists of approximately one linear kilometre of company documents, accounts, reports, correspondence, minutes and catalogues
• the architectural records from Grounds, Romberg and Boyd, the firm of Sir Roy Grounds, Frederick Romberg and Robin Boyd, author of The Australian Ugliness (1960) and other works

In keeping with the Library’s mission to develop a lasting record of Victoria’s publishing history, the Library has a number of archives relating to publishing firms, including the Lothian Publishing Company and Sybylla Feminist Press.
