State Library Victoria’s commitment to the people of this state has never been stronger. As we look to the future, we remain steadfast in our role as Victoria’s major research and reference library – a world-class collecting institution and a trusted guardian of our shared history.

The Library developed a Reorganisation Proposal to strengthen its services in response to surging demand and to better manage the new and different ways that people are engaging with the Library.

Some elements of the Proposal, however, created unintended concerns.  After careful consideration of feedback received during the consultation period, the Library has decided to withdraw the Reorganisation Proposal, so that we can refine our approach and ensure it best supports our community, our staff and our long-term vision.

Any revised proposal will be informed by what we have heard throughout this consultation. Our focus will remain on strengthening services, modernising operations and ensuring the Library continues to thrive as a leading home for history, arts, culture and knowledge for the next generation.

The Library’s Ongoing Commitment to Victorians

The Library has consistently delivered on its commitment to Victorians – expanding access, strengthening collections and fostering vibrant community participation. Visitation and usage have increased significantly in recent years. In 2025, visits are projected to reach 3 million.

More Victorians are seeking new forms of digital access and expecting services that reflect contemporary learning and engagement.  To meet these expectations, we must continue to evolve – just as our community, technology and cultural context evolves – while remaining committed to our core purpose: supporting research, learning, public access to information and preserving Victoria’s treasures.

State Library Victoria is the third busiest Library in the world, and this year the Library was recognised globally as one of the world’s most beautiful libraries. Our exhibitions, programs and events have reached record audiences across the state. This growth reflects the deep value Victorians place on their Library.

Our mission is clear and enduring: to enrich the cultural, educational, social and economic lives of all Victorians.
