State Library Victoria’s Vision 2020 redevelopment was recognised in this year’s Victorian Architecture Awards, taking out the esteemed Melbourne Prize, as well as awards in the Heritage–Conservation and Public Architecture categories.

The redevelopment, led by Architectus and Schmidt Hammer Lassen, increased public spaces by 40 per cent and seating by 70 per cent, transforming the iconic heritage building into a library for the future while maintaining the building’s beloved architectural heritage.

State Library Victoria CEO Kate Torney said the redevelopment could not have been in better hands.

“Working with Architectus and Schmidt Hammer Lassen, our vision was to create a seamless link between the Library’s rich history and its changing role in the twenty first century. Looking at the building today, I’m so proud to see this vision come to life.

“The design is awe-inspiring and it’s a reflection of the resilience, adaptability and creativity that is at the heart of the Library. I’m thrilled that the team at Architectus and Schmidt Hammer Lassen have been recognised for their incredible work in this year’s Victorian Architecture Awards,” said Ms Torney.

The winners of the awards were announced in a digital ceremony on Friday, 10 July, with 63 award recipients across 15 categories, showcasing the state’s best architectural projects.

Judges praised the Library redevelopment, saying its contribution to the public and its considered treatment of architectural heritage were impressive.

“Projects such as the State Library offer a major benefit to Melburnians and the way it has been brought back to life is a real gift to the city,” said Ingrid Bakker, the event’s chair of juries.

From co-working hubs to study nooks, children’s reading corners, wedding and event spaces, podcast booths and video editing suites, the Library’s $88.1 million redevelopment responded to the changing needs of the Library’s growing community by delivering a world-leading emporium of knowledge to the people of Victoria.
