State Library Victoria has announced that Joel McGuinness will be joining the Library as Director, Experience. The new appointment is integral to delivering the Library’s 2026 Strategic Plan to be globally recognised as a ‘must-do’ destination, delivering stimulating cultural experiences and a place of connection for Victoria’s diverse communities.

Joel has most recently spent 6 years as CEO and Creative Director at the Geelong Arts Centre where he oversaw the very successful $180 million redevelopment, making it the largest regional arts centre in Australia. Upon accepting the appointment, Joel said he was “excited to start a new chapter as Director Experience at the Library. I'm grateful for the opportunity to play my part in shaping cultural experiences and contributing to the Library’s bold vision of being a 'must-do' experience in Victoria. I look forward to connecting with diverse communities in this role and leading the Library’s Experience team into the future.”

State Library Victoria Chief Executive Officer Paul Duldig said he was delighted to welcome Joel to the Library’s leadership group.

“State Library Victoria is the third busiest library in the world. Our civic spaces are a vibrant hub of activity in the heart of Melbourne, with an incredible program of must-see exhibitions, conversations and events. Joel brings a wealth of experience and leadership, and we look forward to his vision for delivering world-class cultural experiences for Victoria.”
