State Library Victoria, one of the world’s leading public libraries, has secured the services of creative sector veteran John Wicks to lead daily business operations as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer.

Fresh from playing a pivotal role in the establishment of Hong Kong’s new M+ Museum, and before that Sydney Modern, John brings extensive experience in driving strategic change across a wide range of public sector and arts-based institutions, including Art Gallery NSW, Hurstville City Council, Cultural Facilities Corporation and the Australia Council for the Arts.

He joins State Library Victoria on 17 July 2023.

State Library Victoria Chief Executive Officer Paul Duldig said he was delighted to welcome such an experienced individual to the organisation’s leadership group.

“I am certain that John will prove to be key to the delivery of our ambitious strategy, harnessing the power of literature, art and innovation to maximise our impact for Victorians through curiosity and creativity.

“There are few people with this combination of skills and experience in the Australian cultural sector, and I am pleased to secure the services of a COO who is able to oversee the scale of change which State Library Victoria is undertaking.”

Mr Wicks commented: “There are few institutions that can claim to have a closer connection to the identity of a community than State Library Victoria.

“To join a team working to turn an incomparable collection into a truly unique gateway into Victorian life is a wonderful opportunity, and I am determined to help strengthen the impact of such a cherished public asset.”

Mr Wicks will take over duties from Alistair Mytton, who has been acting as State Library Victoria’s Interim Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer for seven months.

State Library Victoria CEO Paul Duldig thanked Alistair Mytton for his expertise and stewardship over a period of transition for the institution.

“Alistair has been a fantastic asset to State Library Victoria, and an invaluable source of support and guidance to me after my appointment as CEO.

“I wish him all the very best with his next challenge and thank him for his outstanding contribution.”
