LEGO® returns to State Library Victoria these school holidays

Embark on a journey of curiosity and discovery at State Library Victoria with a vibrant program of free events and exhibitions. Here are the highlights:

  • Lego® Robotics Workshop: Lost Books – build your own LEGO® brick robot and solve a mystery!  Some of the Library’s most important books have been lost within the stacks of the Library shelves.  Primary schoolers will create and code a LEGO® brick robot and then tour the Library to find the books hidden in plain sight. Join Annie O’Reilly from LEGO® Masters Australia and Building Mindfulness in this interactive workshop exploring problem solving and coding. This is a free event. Bookings are essential. 10.30am - 12pm and 2pm - 3.30pm, 19, 20, 27 & 30 September.

  • Handmade Universe: Children’s Trail – Young art enthusiasts and their grown-ups can take this self-guided tour of Handmade Universe – From craft to code and the spaces between. See Sarah Spencer’s giant knitted star map and design a book cover for a story set in space 100 years from now. The Children’s Trail activity booklet is full of facts, questions and inspiration - the perfect resource for parents to help kids understand and enjoy this major exhibition. This is a free event. Open daily, 10am – 6pm, 17 September – 2 October.

  • Crafting the Night Sky: Ignite your child’s wonder with the sun, stars and moon with craft workshops dedicated to school age children and their parents. Take a guided tour of Handmade Universe followed by Crafting the Night Sky workshop, where budding artists will create a paper star book to take home. This is a free event. Bookings are essential. 10.30am – 12pm and 2pm – 3.30pm, 22, 26 & 29 September.

  • World of the book 2021-22: the rare, the sacred and the iconic – Revisit the magic and innocence of childhood with a wonderful collection of rare children’s books. The exhibition includes beautifully illustrated, rare editions of Mother Goose, Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp, delightful bushland tales from famous Australian authors and the work of Oscar-winning illustrator Shaun Tan. This is a free event. Open daily from 10am – 6pm. 

  • History of the Library Tour – Explore the magnificent spaces of one of the oldest public libraries in the world. From the Ian Potter Queens Hall to the iconic Latrobe Reading Room and Ned Kelly’s armour, the History of the Library tour tells the story of State Library Victoria from 1856 to today. This is a free event. Bookings are essential. Tours run Tuesday to Sunday.
