State Library Victoria advises that due to temporarily elevated construction noise the La Trobe Reading Room will be closed from Wednesday 17 October, and is expected to reopen before Christmas.

During this time, alternative work and study space will be made available in the newly renovated Victoria Gallery, accessible through the Redmond Barry Reading Room.

State Library Victoria CEO Kate Torney said the closure was necessary for a short time due to higher levels of construction noise expected in the La Trobe Reading Room.

“The Library is halfway through our Vision 2020 redevelopment, which will open 40% more public space and deliver 70% more seating,” Ms Torney said.

“We are providing an alternative study and work area within the newly refurbished heritage Victoria Gallery while these works are underway.

“We understand that the closure of the La Trobe Reading Room may inconvenience our visitors, however it’s necessary to isolate peak noisy works from the rest of the Library.

“I thank all of our visitors for their patience while we continue with this once-in-a-generation transformation.”

The La Trobe Reading Room will be open on Sundays and Public Holidays. A detailed calendar of opening days can be viewed via this link.

Work, study and reading spaces are also available in the Library’s Russell Street Welcome Zone, Newspapers and Family History Reading Rooms, Arts Reading Room and Redmond Barry Reading Room.
