Discover the stories behind the faces of Melbourne’s Big Issue magazine vendors.

In celebration of The Big Issue’s 20th anniversary, Melbourne artist Virginia Hodgkinson has painted an exceptional series of sensitively rendered portraits of local vendors, inspired by their moving personal histories.

Featuring 17 portraits of vendors accompanied by their personal statements, the idea for this project originated from Virginia’s desire to work with local communities. She took to the streets of Melbourne, Geelong and interstate to meet and sketch vendors, learning their stories along the way.
