While stories like Thomas More’s 1516 Utopia have previously provided optimism and a glimpse of the perfect world, it’s dystopian fiction like The Hunger Games, The Handmaid’s Tale and 1984 that have progressively captured readers’ imaginations.
It begs the question: what does the future hold? Will we be living in a paradise or a post-apocalypse?
In our final Salon After D’Arc event for the year, a lineup of storytellers explore the nature of utopian and dystopian worlds, diving into the dream of what could be and the uncomfortable space where fiction and reality are increasingly meeting.
Through comedy, film, art and books, each speaker will interrogate different worlds, touching on the themes that are depicted and whether we are seeing it mirrored in the real world.
Speakers include:
- Kate Jinx, film curator, writer and co-host of the podcast See Also
- Sashi Perera, Sri Lankan-Australian comedian, writer and recovering lawyer
- Eugen Bacon, African-Australian speculative fiction author
- Kylie Banyard, award-winning artist and Senior Lecturer in Visual Arts at La Trobe University
- Daniel Wee, Senior Collection Curator, History of the Book, State Library Victoria
There will also be an opportunity to view rare items acquired by the Women Writers Fund and from related Library collections.
Doors open from 6.30pm. Cheese boxes are available for pre-purchase with a ticket (not available for purchase on the night). Drinks will be available to purchase on the night.
