Exhibition temporarily closed

State Library Victoria is temporarily closed until further notice and all Library programs are cancelled or postponed until at least 13 April 2020. Full refunds will be issued and the Library will be in touch with ticket holders over the coming weeks. This does not affect events by Showtime Event Group.

This decision was not taken lightly and is a preventative step to support the health and wellbeing of staff and volunteers and help stem the spread of COVID-19 in the Victorian community.

For full details on State Library Victoria’s temporary closure please visit our information page.

About the exhibition

Enjoy a selection of the Library’s 21st-century paintings of Melbourne cityscapes by living Australian artists. Works include depictions of Melbourne’s hallowed sporting grounds, with MCG, Josie Kunoth Petyarre’s view of the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, the home of Australian Rules Football, and Shane Jones’s Flemington Racecourse, showing the birthplace of the internationally renowned Melbourne Cup horserace.

Rick Amor’s work shows some less familiar perspectives, with distant views of the city from remote hills and from the Yarra River and docklands, and across rooftops in Across the city. Tony Lloyd’s Skystone, William Mackinnon’s Exit and Louise Forthun’s Toffee and ice present abstracted views of urban sites and landmarks and provoke reflection on our interaction with the built environment.
