Lunch with the Library is an online event series exclusive to Friends of the Library. Log in to a Zoom presentation and hear directly from Library experts, including collectors, curators and conservators as they showcase some of their favourite items from the State Collection.
From the epic journey of the CSS Shenandoah to classic Aussie Rules memorabilia, join us for Lunch with the Library as Principal Librarians Tim Hogan and Dr Kevin Molloy take you from the pages of a lieutenant’s diary to the footy field, all from the comfort of home.
- State Library Victoria holds the largest and most varied collections of material relating to Australian Rules football in Australia. Tim Hogan will introduce us to Hal (Harold) Gye an acclaimed comic artist, caricaturist and football cartoonist. As football cartoons are among the most popular and intriguing visual depictions of the game, Tim will explore Hal Gye's cartoons and explain some fascinating insights behind the various images.
- The arrival of the American Confederate raider the CSS Shenandoah in Melbourne in January 1865 was a minor sensation. Based on a close reading of the Library’s diary of the CSS Shenandoah, penned by one of the ship’s officers Lieutenant Dabney Scales about the nearly four weeks the officers and crew spent in the city and Ballarat, Dr Kevin Molloy will follow the voyage over that momentous year. Where did they go, what did they do and what happened to the officers and crew of the ship?
This event will be hosted by the Library's Liz Pye.
