Discover the riches of the Rare Book Collection as our expert curators take you on a journey around the world through the beauty of the book, from illuminated medieval manuscripts to great works of literature, art and exploration.

The books displayed will include a sumptuous illuminated manuscript made in Paris c. 1525, the second folio of William Shakespeare’s collected works (1632), the world’s first star atlas (1781), and John Gould’s stunning work about hummingbirds (1861).

Planning your visit

State Library Victoria is a Child Safe Organisation. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Visitors to the Library over 18 years of age must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and will be required to provide proof of vaccination, either with a digital certificate linked to the Service Victoria app or a printed copy of their vaccination certificate with identification.
