You’re never too young to experience the healing power of stories!
Join practicing bibliotherapist Susan McLaine for two special kids' episodes of Bibliotherapy with State Library Victoria – just in time for Book Week!
Episode one, Monday 19 October
Susan shares a story and a poem with families to promote imaginative conversations around self-awareness and the strengths that help us get through challenging times.
Featured readings: The March of the Ants, written by current Australian Children’s Laureate Ursula Dubosarsky, and Paper Boats by Rabindranath Tagore.
Activity: In this episode, children will be invited to make their own paper boat. This is a strengths-based activity to encourage parents and caregivers to tell children what they are good at and what positive attributes and attitudes they have. Follow these instructions to make a paper boat.
Best suited for 7-9 year olds, however each episode explores concepts which are suitable for any age with a parent/caregiver present to provide guidance.
Episode two, Wednesday 21 October
Susan shares a story and a poem with families to promote creative conversations about resilience and different perspectives of the world as it is right now.
Featured readings: Little Big Tree by Tim Brown and Andy Geppert, and Scarecrow by Janeen Brian.
Best suited for 10-12 year olds, however each episode explores concepts which are suitable for any age with a parent/caregiver present to provide guidance.
Parents are encouraged to listen on their own first if they’re curious how the episode will run.
Bibliotherapy for kids with State Library Victoria will be available from 11am on 19 and 21 October via soundcloud, and will be shared on our landing page.
