Beyond the Book: Dive Deeper into Design, Data and Digitisation

Learn about the remarkable technologies used to create our new digital exhibition, Beyond the Book: A Journey through the Treasures of the Emmerson Collection, from state-of-the-art photogrammetry to using linked data for digital curation.

In this hands-on workshop with Professor Mitchell Whitelaw, Head of School of Art and Design, Australian National University; Julia Rodwell, PhD candidate with the Emmerson Project; Bart Geraedts, Senior Digital Production Technician, State Library Victoria; and Katrina Ben, Senior Conservator, Books, State Library Victoria; you will learn about:

  • Making explicit and reusable connections through linked data
  • Modelling cultural heritage and collections data to an ontology
  • Creating 3D models using photogrammetry
  • What goes into designing a digital exhibition – data, graphics, interaction and exploration.

Please bring your own digital device to use during this workshop. While you can use your phone, a laptop or a device with a larger screen will provide the best experience.

About the panel

Professor Mitchell Whitelaw is an academic, writer and maker with interests in digital design and culture, data practices, more-than-human worlds, and digital collections. He is the Head of the School of Art and Design at the Australian National University.

Julia Rodwell is a PhD candidate in the School of Art and Design at the Australian National University. Her PhD research sits within the ARC Linkage Project Transforming the Early Modern Archive: The Emmerson Collection at State Library Victoria.

Bart Geraedts is the Senior Digital Production Technician at State Library Victoria. He created all the 2D images and 3D photogrammetry for the Beyond the Book exhibition.

Katrina Ben is a Book Conservator at the State Library of Victoria.  She has a BA (Hons) in Classical Studies with Philosophy from the University of Melbourne.

About the Emmerson Collection

The Emmerson Collection of rare books is Australia's largest collection of rare British printed works. The collection will be featured feature in State Library Victoria’s latest exhibition, Beyond the Book: A Journey through the Emmerson Collection, which creates a new way to experience rare books and collection data in the digital realm. This project has been developed through a collaborative partnership funded by an ARC Linkage Grant.

Exhibition partners include Australian National University, University of Newcastle, Victoria University of Wellington and State Library Victoria.
