The fallout from the two conscription plebiscites at which the ‘no’ vote triumphed (supported by many Catholic Australians) was felt for decades. Australia’s Catholics, almost totally of Irish heritage in this period, were characterised as disloyal citizens of the British Empire and condemned as members of the republican Irish political party, Sinn Féin.
