Book a self-guided class visit to the Library
Please note: the Library is temporarily closed. Bookings for self-facilitated school visits are currently unavailable.
The Library’s heritage buildings and diverse collections make it a stimulating destination for students of all ages. There’s lots to see, do and explore, including:
- seeing Ned Kelly’s armour
- visiting the iconic La Trobe Reading Room
- marvelling at the newly restored Ian Potter Queen’s Hall (reopening 25 May 2021)
- viewing our Window on Collections exhibition and the Cowen Gallery.
School students are welcome to explore the Library in COVID-safe numbers, however bookings are essential.
For online programs led by Library staff, browse our virtual programs.

On the day of your visit
Booked school groups are to meet on the Library forecourt where a member of staff will greet your class and help check you in on arrival.
Adults in your group will be asked to wear orange 'Teacher visitor' stickers to assist us in identifying self-guiding groups.
While COVID-safe requirements remain in place, students must explore the Library in small groups no larger than five. For students in year eight and younger, each small group requires adult supervision. Only one group should visit an exhibition or study space at a time, and you may reconnect as a larger group once outside the Library.
We ask all visitors to help maintain a COVID-safe environment. For more information please refer to the Library’s Conditions of Entry.
To encourage an enjoyable and memorable visit, please support your students to maintain the Library’s quiet atmosphere. Students remain the responsibility of teachers at all times.
State Library Victoria is a Child Safe Organisation. Learn more about how we are working to ensure the wellbeing of children visiting the Library.
The Library's entrance is the Swanston Street Welcome Zone, on Swanston Street. Free, temporary bus parking is available in the 30-minute bus parking bay adjacent to Door 3, outside the Library’s conference centre and theatrette, on La Trobe Street.
Note: Please warn students to be alert when stepping off the bus, as they will need to cross a bike lane to reach the footpath.
Day parking for buses is available on Russell Street, either just north of La Trobe Street or just north of Bourke Street. Additional parking is available on Mackenzie Street, near the corner of Russell and La Trobe streets.
