Vicfix: improving newspapers online

Old newspapers contain extraordinary insights into our history, and the Library digitises and makes available thousands of Victorian newspaper articles each year on Trove, the National Library of Australia's digital resource hub.

The digitisation process generates 'Electronically Translated Text' for each article, making every word searchable. Some automated text translations contain errors, however, and crucial details can't be found by searching. Fixing these translation errors grants access to key information that may otherwise be almost impossible to find.

From 2015 to 2019 we ran Vicfix, a series of regular campaigns to fix digitised Victorian newspaper articles on Trove.

We published campaign sets of articles on intriguing aspects of Victorian history and invited members of the public to click through to Trove to fix the 'Electronically Translated Text' of these articles.

Thanks to our digital volunteers' tireless contributions, the fascinating stories and hidden details that make up Victoria's rich history have been made newly available for everyone.
