For the first time in Library history, the kids are taking over some of our spaces!

On one exciting day every school holidays, you’re invited to join us at the Library as we transform a range of our redeveloped spaces into an interactive and colourful playground for kids.

From the forecourt to the Quad, the Library will be bursting with activities, experiences and fun for kids and their grownups.

Book your spot for the morning session or afternoon session.

Explore the program for our first ever Kids' Takeover event below, all free unless stated.

Library Forecourt

Join us at the Club Kids Music Academy; an array of keyboards, synths, percussion instruments and other noise-makers for kids to play in an environment that fosters independence and creativity.

Children are invited to learn, play, tinker and share in the joy of electronic sound, while professional musicians add beats and mix the cacophony together into a new tune!

Pauline Gandel Children's Quarter

Join in on a collaborative craft takeover with international artist, illustrator and designer Beci Orpin.

Throughout the day the Pauline Gandel Children’s Quarter will be the arts and crafts hub for the Kids' Takeover, featuring a collaborative craft installation led by Beci and drop-in creative workshops.

Create Quarter

Enjoy Exquisite Stories by Playable Streets, which uses interactive sound installations to inspire storytelling experiments and creativity.

Kids are prompted to pick a head, a body and a tail and mix them all together to discover all the hilarious story combinations they can create!

Conversation Quarter

Andrew McDonald and Ben Wood, the minds behind our favourite pigeons, need your help! Join in for their new show Real Pigeons Live Mystery, where you can expect lots of pigeon mischief, questionable cats and laughter.

There’s an 11am and 2pm event available to book, and their latest book Real pigeons flex feathers (out 5 May) will be available for special advance purchase on the day.

This event is $20 per child, with free entry for a parent/carer included.

Please note: Kids' Takeover is happening at the Swanston Street end of the Library, and there is plenty of space in the Collection Zone for quiet study and research.

Pauline Gandel Children's Quarter, supported by Gandel Philanthropy, is a purpose-built space for children and families to read, learn and play, with an associated program of activities.
