Swanston Street entrance closure

On Friday 21 September, as part of the Library's Vision 2020 redevelopment, the Swanston Street entrance and foyer, Information Centre, courtyards and Palmer Hall will close for construction. The Swanston Street entrance and ground floor spaces will reopen in Spring 2019.

From 21 September, entrance to the Library will be through our new Russell Street and La Trobe Street entrances.

The new Russell Street Welcome Zone, bigger Readings bookshop and new cafe will also open on this day.

Library early closure

In preparation for the change of entrances, the Library will close at 4pm on Thursday 20 September. Requests for books and journals will close at 3.30pm.

Courtyard closures

The Arts and Newspapers & Family History reading rooms are currently closed. Microfilm requests, readers and printers are not available. In many cases, alternative online or onsite access to collection material is available. For full details, see our research guide.

The reading rooms will reopen on Friday 21 September in beautiful new spaces in the Library's redeveloped eastern galleries.

Readings bookshop temporary closure

The Readings State Library bookshop will be closed from Monday 17 September until Friday 21 September, when it will reopen in the Russell Street Welcome Zone.

AFL Grand Final public holiday

The Library will be open 10am–6pm on Friday 28 September. 

Tours will not run.

Please order maps and pictures by 3pm Wednesday 26 September, and other Heritage Collections items by 3pm Thursday 27 September.
