Make your own book workshop – secondary

$150 per group (up to 25 students)
Terms 1 & 2: 100 students; Terms 3 & 4: 50 students

During this tactile learning experience, secondary students will design and produce their own book – from creating the cover and stitching the pages to personalising and decorating their creation.

The program also includes a guided tour of the Library's History of the Book collection in the World of the book exhibition and a visit to the stunning La Trobe Reading Room.

Student experience

Students will:

  • learn traditional book-making techniques and create their own hardcover book
  • explore the history of the written and printed word in the World of the book exhibition
  • gain insights into the Library's History of the Book collection and explore the history of printing and book production
  • take a guided tour of the Library's unique heritage spaces, including the iconic La Trobe Reading Room.

Skills development

This program links to the Victorian Curriculum and assists students to:

  • experiment and create a book using materials, techniques, technologies and processes specific to book-making (VCAVAV026)
  • analyse the cause and effects of developments in book-making and printing in the medieval period (VCHHK117)
  • synthesise information from multiple sources and use lateral thinking techniques to draw parallels between known and new solutions and ideas when creating original proposals and artefacts (VCCCTQ034).

The Library has provided free access to information and education since 1856, and we invite students to become part of history as they tour the breathtaking dome and view our historic collections. All tours and workshops are developed by experienced teachers, aligned to the Victorian Curriculum and facilitated by expert staff.
