Student placements

State Library Victoria welcomes applications for short, unpaid, work-based learning placements from tertiary students studying in a field relevant to the work of the Library.

Applications will be considered if:

  • you are a current tertiary student
  • the placement is authorised by your educational institution, and
  • your institution provides insurance cover for you while you are on placement.

The following Library teams accept placements from students in relevant fields:

  • Collection Resources: for students in ALIA-recognised librarian and library technician courses who have completed all cataloguing units.
  • Community Programs: for students of exhibition design and curation, public program development and delivery, and publishing.
  • People and Culture: for students of human resources or volunteer management.
  • Preservation and Conservation: for students of materials conservation.
  • Visitor & Information Services: for students in ALIA-recognised librarian and library technician courses, humanities or tourism. Other courses will also be considered.
  • StartSpace: for students of event management, community management, business or entrepreneurship.
  • Strategy and Planning: for students of administration, humanities, management, business, analytics, information management or project management.

Applications are accepted throughout the year and are assessed on a case-by-case basis depending on the needs and capacity of the team that you wish to be placed with, availability of suitable work and the number of student placement requests received.

Note: placements are not open to secondary school students.

How to apply

Placements for students enrolled in ALIA-recognised librarian and library technician courses are coordinated by our Service Delivery and Design team, liaising with student placement coordinators at universities and TAFEs. Please make contact with your course’s student placement coordinator to enquire about a placement at the State Library.

For all other subject areas, please email our People and Culture team at with the following:

  • a cover letter outlining why you are interested in a placement at the Library, including your areas of interest, intended learning outcomes and the month in which you would like to undertake the placement;
  • a brief resumé, including grades for completed units of your current study, and
  • any information provided by your educational institution about this placement.

Other roles at the Library

Students not participating in a formal placement endorsed by their educational institution, as well as graduates and other non-students, are ineligible for student placements but are welcome to apply for advertised jobs or volunteer roles.
