About the Manchester Unity Building

When this magnificent building opened on the prominent corner of Swanston and Collins streets, thousands thronged to admire its breathtaking Gothic facade and to experience the novelty of travelling on Melbourne's first escalator.

Newspapers at the time were effusive in praising the building as a 'symphony of labor, art and science' that symbolised confidence in Victoria's ability to recover from the Depression.
