About Clunes Football Club
One of Aussie Rules' other Magpies, the Clunes Football Club has graced the paddock since the 1870s. Reports of the club's weekly skirmishes with rival regional teams provide exquisite insights into local rural life in the first decades of the 20th century, when local football clubs were a great source of pride for rural communities.
Historic reports ranging from the 1870s to 1920s critique the players' on-the-field gamesmanship and skill, playing against such local rivals as Newlyn, Creswick and Smeaton. From contested umpire decisions to goals, behinds, points and no-show teams, the newspaper columns relive the highs and lows of country football.
