Join this Vicfix campaign to celebrate the great Australian outdoors Christmas

Vicfix is improving the searchability of digitised newspaper articles and making the hidden details of Victoria's rich history available for everyone.

About Christmas sports

If the sun was shining, Christmas in the 19th century offered a Santa sack full of outdoor pursuits in celebration of the season and a holiday from work.

Historic newspapers provide gleeful details on myriad al fresco entertainments, including country race meetings, garden picnics, boating regattas, pole vaulting and potato races. Colonial partygoers with more exhibitionist inclinations could choose from grinning through horse collars, tilting at the ring in fancy costume and climbing greasy poles.
