State Library Victoria is home to more than 5.1 million items, including 2 million books, journals and magazines, 114,000 maps, and more than 8 kilometres of manuscripts – enough to wrap around the MCG over 17 times. A dizzying 78,00 items are added each year.

The storage of these rare and sometimes fragile materials is part science, part art. On this behind-the-scenes tour you will discover the secrets of the specialised furniture that safely houses an incredible variety of collection items, explore how delicate paintings and artworks are kept in pristine condition, and learn the ins and outs of storing hundreds of thousands architectural drawings and maps.
