Melbourne’s property market boomed in the 1880s, as new suburb developments opened up a land of promise for the burgeoning middle class. Real estate companies of the day produced decorative posters featuring maps of lots available at upcoming auctions. The maps typically displayed the location of the available blocks and highlighted their proximity to shops, train stations and public parks.

Come and hear about the Library’s collection of auction plans, complete with colourful illustrations, elaborate fonts, cartoons and even verse.
