Browse newspapers, journals & magazines

Whether you have a research paper to write or just want to catch up on the news, the appeal of our Family History & Newspaper Room and Journals & Magazines Reading Room can't be beaten. We have current and archived Victorian, Australian and international newspapers, journals and magazines for you to browse through or seriously study. And lots of comfortable armchairs.

News hounds will find current newspapers in hard copy in the Family History & Newspaper Room or in our online collections, particularly PressDisplay. Older issues and out-of-print newspapers are available on microfilm and in online databases.

If you're after the latest glossies, we have an eclectic range of Australian and international publications including New Scientist, BRW, Bride, Australian Gourmet Traveller, Vogue, Der Spiegel and The New Yorker.

We also have special interest journals and magazines – everything from Footwear News and Red Meat Market Report to Far Eastern Economic Review. We have copies of AFL footy records for you to browse, too. And all federal and state government publications dating from 2000.

The latest popular magazines are on shelves at the back of the Redmond Barry Reading Room. Older copies of magazines and journals are available on the shelves in the Journals & Magazines Reading Room.

Staff are on hand to help you locate journals and newspapers. We can also help you use the microfilm readers and assist you with any specific queries. If you can't find what you're looking for, you may need to request it from storage.

And if all that isn't enough, a display of printers' tools and implements, newspaper facsimiles and historical information about media moguls and Victorian newspapers will have you up to date on the history of newspapers.
