Open Road

Designed as a resource for public libraries in Victoria, the Open Road is managed by the State Library's Public Libraries Unit and Libraries Online.

What is the Open Road?

The Open Road is a web site containing links to information in many languages around the world.  Its directory is a community resource providing a starting point for surfing web pages in different languages. With a large migrant population from around the world, the internet is one way, among others, that Victorian public library services can extend their services to members of their local communities from non-English speaking backgrounds. More background information about the Open Road project can be found in the Partnerships section of this website.

Other aspects

As well as the ongoing development of the Open Road directory, the following services are provided as part of the project:

  • a training program for Victorian public library staff to enable them to provide multicultural services, and
  • the configuration of public internet workstations in public libraries to handle multilingual access.
