Shaun Tan, keeping busy

Shaun Tan has won Germany’s biggest prize for youth literature, the Deutsche Jugenliteraturpreis. Our German-born colleague Tina assures us that the prize isĀ  big deal in Germany. Indeed Shaun Tan described the ceremony (he happened to be in Europe last week) as “a big event, structured a bit like the Oscars”. Though being entirely in German some of the detail escaped him. Tina commented that in Germany there is a different idea of “the suburbs”, such that she is still *amazed* to drive through the outer suburbs of Melbourne. It’s there she knows she is in another country. Still, this hasn’t stopped Germany falling under the spell of Tan’s playful genius.

Someone else a bit enthralled by Shaun’s work is Margo Lanagan. The artwork of a new edition of Tender Morsels is up on Margo’s blog. You can view it here.
