Reading, writing, reading, writing, reading
Reading Matters. Yes, bookings are steaming ahead for Australia’s leading youth literature event. So if you are thinking of joining us for the conference May 28-30 you may want to get cracking on the booking business. With writers like John Green, Isobelle Carmody, MT Anderson, Libby Gleeson, Armin Greder and James Roy, why wouldn’t you want to be here?
All information can be downloaded here.
In addition to the conference, we are creating a devilish hypothetical titled So You Want to be a YA Writer? Take a tour around the backlots of writng and publishing and find out what really goes on. The hypothetical is on Thursday May 28 from 7pm.
I have just polished off the second volume of MT Anderson’s The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, Volume Two, The Kingdom on the Waves. To give its full title. What a brilliant, original, challenging, demanding, moving, satisfying and singular book this is. I’m really looking forward to hearing from Tobin when he is here for Reading Matters.

On Friday we ran a very well received creative writing workshop with Clare Renner. The major theme of the feedback was that it could have been a much longer session. So we will take that advice and see what we can do next time. On May 1 we have a similar session for teachers working with boys. Michael Hyde will lead the workshop. Bookings still available. Contact us on 8664 7555 for more information.
Last week I also hopped up to Canberra to visit the Lu Rees Archives, a research collection enabling the study of Australian children’s and YA literature. The collections of books (including international editions), manuscripts and pictures are meticulously organised and made accessible by the wonderful staff. So thanks to Belle Alderman and her team for making me so welcome last week.
