World without books

Today is Indigenous Literacy Day, highlighting the need to assist Aboriginal communities across Australia in reading and writing. In Melbourne, the formidably able Kristin Gill put together a launch event at Ivanhoe Girls Grammar. Speakers included Aaron Davey from the Melbourne Football Club, Paul Jennings, Kaz Cooke and the emcee Ernie Dingo.

In talking about the Indigenous Literacy Project, Kristin noted that publishers were asked not simply to donate books they didn’t particularly want or need, but to work with the IPL to find the right kinds of books and resources for communities.

Last year ILP raised over $250,000. They are hoping to do even better this time and with participating bookshops donating 5% of today’s takings well, you really have no excuse not hop out and get shopping. How easy is that?

Students at Ivanhoe Girls Grammar raised over $1200 for the project.

Patron of the Indigenous Literacy Project is Therese Rein.
