Stories as a way in: exploring refugee and asylum seeker experiences and issues through fiction, film and pictures
Stories are a crucial way for teachers and students to understand and talk about refugees and asylum seekers. The Centre for Youth Literature offers practical professional development for primary and secondary teachers, with speakers including
• Andrew Hewett, Executive Director, Oxfam Community Aid Abroad
• Rosanne Hawke, author of Soraya the Storyteller
• John Kilner, The Age and author of Australia and the Refugee/Asylum Seeker Issue
• David Miller, creator of the picture book Refugees
• Judy Blyton, Librarian, Languages and Multicultural Education Resource Centre
• Nicole McKinnon, co-creator of the animated documentary It’s Like That
Attendees receive materials including a PowerPoint kit, booklists and strategies. This program is tailored for effective teaching and resource development in schools.
